Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cup Dr. Pepper (regular or cherry flavored)
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 can cherry pie filling
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • For the Frosting
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/4 cup Dr. Pepper
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Maraschino cherries for garnish (optional)

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, combine the chocolate cake mix, Dr. Pepper, vegetable oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until well blended.
Fold in the cherry pie filling until evenly distributed.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool completely in the pan.
For the Frosting
In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat.
Stir in the cocoa powder and Dr. Pepper, mixing until smooth.
Remove from heat and gradually add the powdered sugar, beating until smooth and creamy.
Stir in the vanilla extract.
Spread the frosting over the cooled cake and garnish with maraschino cherries if desired.
