Ingredients:
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 1/4 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon liquid black food coloring
- 1 cup hot coffee
For the frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.Whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy in a large bowl. Beat the eggs individually, then stir in the buttermilk, vanilla, and black food coloring.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the hot coffee, starting and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until smooth.
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes clean.
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them onto a wire rack to cool completely.
For the frosting, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add confectioners' sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla, and beat until smooth.
Frost the cooled cakes and stack them.
